Abstract

The art of improvisation is a field that is continuously explored in music education. The purpose of this paper is twofold: a) the application of musical theoretical knowledge based on recent survey on improvisations over melodies that are based on fixed harmonic progressions, and b) to demonstrate how non-free improvisation may be applied both in the private teacher studio and the music classroom.

  • Dan Cahn, Haifa University and the Technion Institute

    Dan Cahn is a composer, arranger and jazz pianist. Dr. Cahn teaches jazz improvisation courses at Haifa University and the Technion Institute and is coordinator of the jazz history course at the Open University. He also teaches courses in world music and psychology of music. is book in Hebrew titled "The History of Jazz in the 20th century" (2017) was published by the Open University. Cahn serves as musical director and jazz pianist of the Open University Jazz Concert Series and his compositions are recorded on the CD "Figment" (1997) with his quartet and the CD "Toreadore" (2008) with his piano trio.
