Teaching String Instruments in Group Lessons: Development, Considerations and the State of Teacher Training in Israel

Abstract

Teaching instrument-playing in group lessons is a relatively recent alternative in Israel to the “private lesson” with a single pupil. The paper presents an overview of the history of string lessons for groups, and the characteristics, methods and considerations involved in teaching group lessons. Described in particular are developments in training Israeli teachers to specialize in teaching string instruments in groups. 

Author Biography

  • Tammy Ordo

    Tammy Ordo is a violinist and a music educator.   She is an Israeli leader and pioneer in teaching music in groups, particularly violin and other string instruments. Member of the School for Teaching Music in Groups in Givat Washington Hill Academic College, and a previous lecturer of methodology course on teaching strings in groups at the Buchmann- Mehta School of Music in Tel-Aviv University. Tammy is a member of the Steering Committee of Israeli Ministry of Education on promoting teaching of string instruments among children and youth, and is involved in writing a methodology book and accompanying website for teaching violin in groups. Served as a consultant to the Jerusalem Music Center in the areas of teaching strings instruments in groups. She conducts various Israeli youth string orchestras and children choirs, some of them comprising her violin students in public schools and children's choirs. Tammy also provides continuing education programs for Israeli teachers in relation to children's active listening to music and preparing children for concerts. She authored the book "An Experience in Sounds 1" published by the Israeli Ministry of Education. She lectured at chamber-music concerts for children and youth sponsored by the Symphony Orchestra Rishon-Lezion. She was also an instructor in "Sulamot", a joint program with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Tammy has worked as a violinist in chamber and symphonic orchestras, in various music ensembles and with singers and instrumentalist musicians in performances and recordings. Tammy Holds MA degree in Music Education from the Levinsky College of Education and a B.A in Musicology and History of Theatre from Tel- Aviv University.
