Abstract

The performance of Mahler’s music throughout the world never evoked unanimous enthusiasm. Also in Israel, the performance of his music generated many discussions, in the context of the Jewish Eretz-Israeli culture of the 1930s and into the early 1950s, following the 1948 establishment of the State of Israel. The present article is the Hebrew version of an article of the same title which was published in Min-Ad: Israel Studies in Musicology Online, vol. 16 (2019). However, this version is not just a translation of that article, which refers to original Hebrew sources.  This revised version is rather an updated presentation that includes an audio recording and rare images which complement the milieu of this version, making it more appropriate for a target Hebrew-speaking audience. Readers will appreciate hearing Leonard Bernstein speak in Hebrew and reading a scanned newspaper article in Maariv about the historical concert on Mount Scopus in 1967.
